One map of where personal data goes, and why

A record of the systems that hold personal data, how data moves between them, why, and who receives it. It is built from what the scanner finds and what your teams know, and kept up to date.

What it does

Data Map in practice

Every system, in one list

Every app, database and supplier that handles personal data, and what each can do, such as export or delete. Tests later run against this list.

Templates for your sector

Start from a ready-made map for banking, healthcare, education or retail and remove what doesn't apply. Practices the law doesn't allow are clearly flagged.

A reason for everything

Each use of data has a stated reason. Data with no reason is the first thing to look at.

s.4 and s.5: lawful purpose, stated in the notice

Also included

The details that matter

  • Shows what you hold, where, why and who you share it with.
  • Your assessment is based on what you actually do.
  • Changes are dated, so you can see how the map looked on any day.

Questions

About Data Map

All questions
Do we have to fill the map in by hand?

Partly. The scanner fills in where data is kept. Why you use it and who you share it with are business decisions, so someone has to confirm them. Sector templates mean you start from a draft.

How is this different from a spreadsheet register?

The map is linked to everything else. Tests run against the systems on it, and consents are checked against the reasons on it.
